About Us

Established in the 1970s, The University of Sydney Archery Club (SUAC) is one of the University of Sydney's largest and most active sporting clubs, welcoming archers of all experience levels—from complete beginners to competitive athletes.

Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where members can develop their archery skills, enjoy the sport, and become part of a vibrant university community. Whether you are trying archery for the first time, looking to improve your technique, or training for competition, SUAC offers regular coaching, structured range sessions, and opportunities to participate in social events and tournaments throughout the year.

The club caters to a variety of archery disciplines and encourages members to progress at their own pace while maintaining the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and respect. All activities are conducted under established range safety procedures and are supported by experienced committee members, instructors, and coaches.

Joining SUAC is more than learning to shoot a bow—it's becoming part of a welcoming community that values friendship, personal development, and a shared passion for archery.

Absolutely! Beginners are always welcome — no prior experience is required.

Before your first shoot, you'll complete a short safety induction (approximately 45 minutes), where one of our qualified and experienced instructors will introduce you to range safety, basic shooting technique, and the correct use of the equipment. Once you've completed the induction, you'll be able to attend regular club training sessions and continue developing your skills at your own pace.

We provide all the equipment you'll need to get started, and our supportive instructors are always happy to offer guidance and answer any questions. Whether you're looking to try something new, shoot recreationally, or eventually compete, you'll find a welcoming and supportive community at our club.

As you progress, our instructors can provide further guidance on different archery disciplines, including traditional, barebow, target recurve, and compound, helping you choose the style and equipment that best suits your interests.

Yes — but only if they are 16 or 17 years old, or will turn 16 during the current calendar year. The University of Sydney Archery Club does not accept members younger than this.

Applicants who are 16–17 years old (including those turning 16 during the current calendar year) are welcome to apply for membership, provided they meet all requirements under our Under-18 Junior Membership Policy, including:

  • A signed Parent or Guardian Declaration providing consent for membership and participation in club activities.

  • Confirmation from the parent or guardian that the applicant is physically fit to participate, understands the inherent risks of archery, and is sufficiently responsible to follow all club rules and safety procedures.

  • Acknowledgement that the parent or guardian accepts responsibility for the member's conduct and compliance with club policies while participating in club activities.

  • Provision of emergency contact details and any relevant medical information required for safe participation.

Please note that The University of Sydney Archery Club is a volunteer-run university club, not a childcare or supervision service. Under 18 members are expected to behave responsibly, comply with all safety requirements, and follow directions from committee members, instructors, and coaches at all times. Parents or guardians may be required to attend future sessions if the committee has concerns regarding safety or behaviour.

If you have any questions about under-18 junior membership or the application process, please contact us before registering. We are happy to discuss your circumstances and explain the requirements.

No. Our club provides all the equipment you'll need to get started, including a bow, arrows, arm guard, finger tab, and quiver. Equipment hire is included with your session, so you can learn the fundamentals without having to purchase your own gear.

As you progress, we also have recurve sights, stabilisers, and beginner compound bows available for members who would like to explore different disciplines before investing in their own equipment.

If you decide to purchase your own gear, our coaches and experienced members can provide personalised advice based on your discipline, experience level, draw length, and budget. We'll help you choose equipment that is safe, suitable, and tailored to your needs, ensuring you start with a setup that supports your long-term development.

Yes. If you have your own archery equipment, you're welcome to bring it to club sessions. For safety reasons, all personal equipment must be inspected and approved by one of our qualified instructors before it can be used on the range.

Please note that firearms and crossbows are strictly prohibited at the club and must not be brought onto the field under any circumstances.

The club does not provide storage for personal equipment. Members are responsible for transporting and storing their own bows, arrows, and accessories outside of club sessions.

Our outdoor range is located at St John's Soccer Oval, The University of Sydney.

Training sessions are held:

  • Mondays: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

  • Fridays: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

We operate year-round, including during university holidays, so you're welcome to join us whenever we're open.

As an outdoor club, training is subject to weather conditions and field availability. In the event of heavy rain, extreme weather, or field closures, sessions may be cancelled for safety reasons. We recommend checking our Discord and Instagram before attending for the latest updates on range availability and any schedule changes.

The University of Sydney Archery Club welcomes members of the public and archers from all backgrounds; however, we are first and foremost a University of Sydney sports club. The club is run by students, for students, and most of our members are unlikely to already be on campus during weekends due to their university commitments.

Our training sessions are scheduled around the field allocation times provided by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF). While we would be happy to offer additional weekend sessions if there was sufficient demand and availability, weekend access to the field is not currently allocated to the club.

We encourage members to attend our regular weekday sessions and follow our Discord and Instagram for any additional events, workshops, or special sessions that may be scheduled.

Our range supports distances up to 70 metres, which is the official Olympic standard distance for outdoor target archery.

All beginners will start at 10 metres during their induction course, where they will learn range safety, basic shooting techniques, and proper equipment handling. To ensure the safety of all members, archers must complete distance qualification assessments before progressing to longer distances.

Distance qualification requirements:

  • The qualification assessment consists of 60 arrows in total (10 rounds of 6 arrows).

  • Archers will shoot at a 122 cm full-ring target face.

  • The assessment must be completed in a single session before the range closes. Unfinished assessments cannot be resumed on another day.

  • No breaks are permitted between rounds.

  • Any arrow that lands outside the scoring rings or misses the target will be recorded as a miss (“M”).

  • A single miss results in an immediate failure of the assessment, and the archer must restart the qualification from the beginning.

To maintain fairness and safety, dishonest behaviour, including falsifying scores or misrepresenting results, is strictly prohibited. If a qualification is found to have been obtained dishonestly, it will be considered invalid and the archer will be required to repeat the assessment.

Upon successfully completing a qualification, archers may progress to the next available distance. Distance qualifications increase in 10-metre increments until reaching the maximum range distance.

The committee and instructors reserve the right to request that a member return to a shorter distance or repeat a qualification assessment if there are concerns regarding their ability to shoot safely and consistently, including repeatedly failing to keep arrows on the target.

Yes! Sydney Uni Archery Club hosts a variety of competitions, social events, and activities throughout the year, catering to members of all experience levels.

For archers interested in competition, members have the opportunity to participate in major archery events such as the National and State Indoor Archery Championships, as well as inter-university competitions held in collaboration with other university archery clubs, including UNSW Archery Club. We also run our own internal competitions, such as the Novice Cup, designed specifically for beginners to experience competitive archery in a supportive and friendly environment.

Beyond competitions, we organise a range of social and community-building activities, including Dress Your Own Bow, pizza days, tea parties, casual training session games, and members' dinners. These events provide opportunities for members to connect, have fun, and build friendships both on and off the range.

Whether you are looking to compete, improve your skills, or simply meet new people through archery, USYD Archery Club offers a welcoming environment for everyone.

Keep an eye on our Discord announcements and Instagram page for updates on upcoming competitions, events, and club activities.
